Psychology's Troubling Past and Promising Future

In this talk, Dr. Aberson discusses how psychology is emerging from a crisis which has called into question many well-known research findings. This questioning has uncovered less than ideal research practices and incentive structures that have created a deeply biased literature. Widespread recognition of these problems is leading to a renaissance in the field, producing new standards and practices. This talk will highlight the historical progression from the “replication crisis” to greater enlightenment and better research.

Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Family and Community Contexts

In this talk, Dr. Phung discusses how children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face a myriad of challenges, and these often spill over to affect their families, peers, and broader community contexts. However, these relationships are also reciprocal, and individuals with ASD also benefit greatly from interacting with others in these broader contexts. Dr. Phung examines these interactive relationships, including the implementation of a martial arts intervention to improve cognitive functioning in children with ASD.

The Cooperative Extension System: An Overview and an Example of Extension Programming for Early Childhood Teachers  and Providers to Address Childhood Obesity

Dr. Speirs describes the applied research, program development, and evaluation conducted by Extension professionals and how students can become involved in this work. She also presents findings from the Feeding Young Children Study, which explores the feeding practices (e.g. role modeling) used by early care and education (ECE) providers. This work lead to the development of an online training program to promote ECE providers' use of role modeling to encourage healthy eating.

Multi-Context Examinations of Classism and Class-Based Inequalities

This presentation focuses on two lines of research which all serve to highlight the different methodologies scientists use to study classism and class-based inequalities: An in-depth examination of classist portrayals of Trump supporters in memes and an experimental manipulation examination of conspiracy theories. This talk also presents findings from focus group discussions regarding student food insecurity.
